Walker, West Virginia
The forest doesn't
invite you.
It assumes
you'll arrive.
Tucked along Camp Kootaga Road in the highlands of West Virginia, our cabin retreat offers unstructured solitude—no Wi-Fi, no schedules, just pine, stone, and the kind of silence that rewrites your sense of time.

Our Story
Built by hand,
held by the mountain
Camp Kootaga began as a seasonal hunting camp—stone foundation, hand-hewn beams, a roof pitched by someone who understood that a mountain doesn't negotiate with weak shelter. Over decades, it became something more deliberate: a place people come to remember what quiet actually sounds like.
We don't offer concierge service. We offer a door that locks from the inside, a woodstove that crackles until it doesn't, and a landscape so complete you'll forget to check your phone—which, between you and us, is the whole point.
The Cabin
One structure.
Everything you need.
Interior
Exposed timber framing, a fieldstone fireplace, and windows that frame the canopy like living paintings. Furnishings are sparse by design—every piece earns its place.
Bedrooms
Multiple sleeping areas with quality linens, heated by the woodstove and the mountain's own thermal mass.
Kitchen
Cast iron, copper pots, and every basic implement. Bring your own provisions—the nearest town is a drive away.
The Deck
A wraparound porch built for sitting, watching, and doing absolutely nothing. Morning coffee here tastes different.
The Grounds
The land does
the working
Hiking & Backcountry
Miles of unmaintained trails through old-growth forest, ridge walks, and creek crossings. Maps available on request.
Fishing & Foraging
Mountain streams hold trout. The woods hold morel mushrooms in spring, blackberries in summer, and hickory nuts in fall.
Stargazing
Zero light pollution means the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye. Bring a blanket. Bring patience.
Wildlife
Whitetail deer, wild turkey, fox, and—on clear nights—occasional black bear. Observe from a respectful distance.
The Experience
Not a getaway.
A return
Most lodging promises escape. Camp Kootaga offers something rarer: a return to the version of yourself that existed before notifications, before optimization, before every hour had to justify its existence.
You'll wake to birds you can't name. You'll cook over a stove you can't app-control. You'll sit on a porch that creaks in a language your body remembers but your mind has forgotten.
This is not a retreat from life. It is a retreat into it.
We came for a weekend and left feeling like we'd been gone for years. The silence here isn't empty—it's full of everything else you've been too busy to hear.
